NAMES OF SHOLARS, PHILOSOPHERS.....

NAMES OF SCHOLARS, PHILOSOPHERS, GREAT THINKERS AND INNOVATORS IN THE PREVIOUS AND MODERN WORLD

1.      Rectangular co-ornate system- Introduced by French Mathematician RENE DA SCARTES (1596 – 1650) who sometimes known as a father of modern mathematics. Location is defined on a flat surface using Cartesian coordinates (i.e., x and y) that specify horizontal and vertical position

2.      Charles Babbage --"26 December 1791 – 18 October 1871) was an English polymath. A mathematician, philosopher, inventor and mechanical engineer, Babbage originated the concept of a digital programmable computer. Babbage is considered by some to be "father of the computer". Babbage is credited with inventing the first mechanical computer, the Difference Engine, that eventually led to more complex electronic designs, though all the essential ideas of modern computers are to be found in Babbage's Analytical Engine. His varied work in other fields has led him to be described as "pre-eminent" among the many polymaths of his century. Babbage, who died before the complete successful engineering of many of his designs, including his Difference Engine and Analytical Engine, remained a prominent figure in the ideating of computing. Parts of Babbage's incomplete mechanisms are on display in the Science Museum in London. In 1991, a functioning difference engine was constructed from Babbage's original plans. Built to tolerances achievable in the 19th century, the success of the finished engine indicated that Babbage's machine would have worked."

3.Eratosthenes Father of geography

Ø   He was born in Cyrene which is now in Libya in North Africa in 276 B.C.

Ø   In his three-volume work Geography he mapped his entire known world, even dividing the Earth into five climate zones.

Ø   One his contributions was the concept of latitude and longitude.

Ø   He was also the first man to be able to calculate the size of the earth (with a minimal 2% error), the earth’s axial tilt, and possibly even its distance from the sun.

4.      Strabo

Ø  Greek geographer and historian

Ø  He was born in 64 B.C. In the Greek city of Amisea in the district of Pontus. His Geography is the only work about the peoples and countries known to both Greeks and Romans during the reign of Augustus (27 B.C.–14 A.D).

5.      Alexander von Humboldt --Prussian geographer, naturalist and explorer

Ø   He was born in 1859.

Ø   His vast work on botanical geography created the groundwork for the biogeography field

Ø

He is considered the father of modern geography

6.      William Morris Davis --Father of American geography

Ø  He was born in 1850 and died in 1934.

Ø  He was an American geographer, geologist, geomorphologist and meteorologist,

Ø  His scientific contribution was the cycle of erosion, which was a model of how rivers create landforms.
